Simone:

Leicester University has the oldest Museum Studies course in the UK and
has had close links with the UK Museums Association since 1967. (Between
1980 and about 1992 it also taught exclusively the Association's
in-service postgraduate Diploma.) It provides a balanced programme
covering museum principles, organisation, and specialisation in most major
areas of curatorship or in education/interpretation.

Presumably the Amsterdam School of Arts course is the Master's at its
Reinwart Academy? The Reinwart, originally in Leiden, NL, was set up in
the mid-1970s as the Dutch national museum studies education centre and
offers - like Leicester - a broadly based museum studies programme,
similar in scope and syllabus to the best of those in the USA (not just an
Arts programme as Robert and Fiona Forsythe assumed in their earlier
reply). The Reinwart now has a partnership with the University of
Newcastle, UK, for its Masters and through this is - I believe - seeking
validation by the UK Museums Training Institute (the national -
government funded - standards and validating body).

Both Leicester and the Reinwart have excellent records for both
relevance and professional standards, as well as for job placements.
Though I feel great loyalty to the Leicester course as someone who
served on its governing board for over 15 years, in all honesty I suspect
that it is not really possible for anyone to separate them in terms of
standards etc. in the way your friend is hoping for.
