Unions are like doctors, attorneys, supermarket
clerks, curators, executive directors, development
officers: There are good, bad, and in-between in all
classifications.

To say all unions are bad is akin to saying all
attorneys are ambulance chasers. Simply not a truth.
There is no absolute.

SOME unions are highly effective. SOME members within
certain unions are highly effective.

Some unions and/or their members have "sold" out to
the corporation that pays their paycheck. They have
lost sight of the purpose for which they were
originally formed.

Some union negotiators lose their jobs lobbying on
behalf of the employees they are there to serve.

Some employees fail to perform effectively and leave
their negotiators with nothing but a bag to hold that
they cannot represent.

There are no absolutes.

Would it be effective to have an all-museum
encompassing type of union? Probably not.

If there are classifications where the volume of those
qualified to do the job is small and the demand great,
a union may be highly effective.

However, in a glutted job market, where the number of
those wanting to work in a museum and are qualified is
greater than the number of positions available by a
substantive number, there may be no effectiveness to
having a union.

As the other gentleman already stated, companies have
the right and/or ability to move to areas where the
cost to produce would be less than in the current
locale (subject only to any governmental restrictions
to the contrary).

Museums, on the other hand, may have less flexibility,
depending upon the type of museum. One cannot move
George Washington's home, or Lincoln's Tomb, or
Sutter's Fort. The birthplace of Nixon cannot be
relocated.
