Hello,

I completed a MA Museum Studies degree at the University of Leeds in 2003,
and had a rough time getting a job right out of school (that great catch 22
of the entry level jobs requiring several years experience), and after
gaining some experience in commercial art galleries, and then working up
until Hurricane Katrina at the Louisiana State Museum on a digital
archiving project.

Since last August (losing my job) I have decided the best route is to get
an MLIS degree, which I feel is more of the technical degree (and it seems
more museums are looking for this too!) I have no qualms against the Museum
Studies program I completed, but I also left feeling like I did not gain
much in the way of skills for the working world (more theory than
practice). I just started the MLIS program at Kent State, and already feel
that I have made the right choice. In looking myself at the universities
with the MLIS degrees, many have courses on Rare Books, Conservation
Issues, etc., and I feel that the MLIS degree is the more 'marketable'
degree as compared to the Museum Studies, but that's just my two cents.

Good luck!

Virginia Dressler

Hope this is of help!
