The Smithsonian Institution 1997 Black History Month Keynote Address

REASSESSING CIVIL RIGHTS
by ELAINE JONES, director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and
Educational Fund

Monday, February 3 at 12 noon
Carmichael Auditorium, National Museum of American History

Elaine Jones has worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational
Fund (LDF) for over 20 years, and has served as the organization's
director-counsel since 1993. In this address, Ms. Jones will draw upon
her experiences as a civil rights attorney to discuss the legacy of the
civil rights movement and its unfinished agenda.  In ther work with LDF,
Ms. Jones has tried precedent-setting cases in the areas of employment
discrimination, environmental justice and capital punishment.

This event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come,
first-served basis. The Carmichael Auditorium is wheel chair accessible.
