Elizabeth,

In a museum I used to work for, textiles were marked as follows:

Unbleached (non-acidic) fabric with the accession number written in india ink or other non-hazardous ink on the fabric was sewn with similar thread (using very fine delicate stitches so as to not break any of the textile) to the reverce side.

Rugs, tapestries, clothing, etc., was done in this manner.
