I have been immersed in these issues for a while myself. There is no one
answer as it really depends on your own situation. You have to consider
what uses you have for the digital file and the nature of what you are
photographing.

In my case, we want to archive a very high res iamge for use in multimedia
or even print reproduction. Also, one collection is flat art. We have found
that digital cameras are inferior in color reproduction. My assistant can
describe this better than I can, but the gist of this is that the digital
camera takes short cuts in how it "reads" color and requires a white object
in the frame so that it reads things correctly. While taking photos for
Kodak CD and then converting the files seems arduous, we do get the archive
version and capture the color of the original. The digital camera did not
save enough time to sacrifice color quality. We did find that the digital
camera is just fine for some objects and where the photo is just for
thumbnails on a computer screen and simple documentation.

good luck
