Just a caution against using nail polish--it generally contains
cellulose acetate and/or nitrocellulose, both of which can be harmful to
underlying artefactual material, as well as subject to breakdown which
can cause it to chip and break away from the artefact, carrying the
accession number with it.  Rather, look into using Acryloid/Paraloid B72
(an inert co-polymer) dissolved in acetone to a nail polish-like
consistency.

Hi,
In museums where I've worked, nail polish has been used.  This is
easily
reversable (an important aspect) and dosn't hurt objects like iron.
Tags
are not the best in general especially if they are not attached as
they
are easily seperated from the object and information is irreversably
lost.
