COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES...
Los Angeles County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors,
elected on a non-partisan basis, for four year terms.  As the governing
body, the Board serves as both the executive and legislative head of the
largest and most complex county government in the country.  Los Angeles

FACILITY PROFILE...
The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History is ranked among the top
four of its type in the United States.  Comprising museums of natural and
cultural history, paleontology, automotive history, and western history, it
is the most diverse save for the Smithsonian Institution.  In size,
diversity, quality and significance, its collections are among the
strongest in the world.  Museum curators have won more than $5.4 million of
competitive grants from the National Science Foundation for care of
biological collections.  The Museum has twice won the Exhibit of the Year
Award of the American Association of Museums; its exhibitions are in demand
around the world.  Education programs have twice been cited as national
models.  The Museum's combined County and Foundation budgets exceed
$19,000,000.  Staffing consists of 64 County budgeted positions and 135
full-time equivalent Foundation positions.  A total of 26.6 million
specimens are maintained within the 16 collection areas of the Research and
Collections Branch.  A total of 600 volunteers are active in providing
95,000 volunteer hours of service to the Museum.  The Museum facilities
open to the public include Natural History Museum/Exposition Park, George
C. Page Museum, Petersen Automotive Museum and the William S. Hart Museum
in Newhall.  Each facility charges admission, except the William S. Hart
Museum, with school tours being charged an established rate.  The Museum is
actively involved in the pursuit of third party special events at all the
museums except the William S. Hart Museum.

MISSION STATEMENT...
The Museum exists to advance knowledge and to enable people of all ages,
backgrounds, and interests to understand and appreciate their natural and
cultural heritage.  The Museum assembles, conserves, interprets, and holds
in trust collections of irreplaceable objects from nature and human
history.  These collections reveal the history of the Earth and the
evolution and diversity of life and culture.  They sustain programs of
research, exhibits, education and publication.

THE POSITION...
The Chief Deputy Director assists the Director in the overall
administration and direction of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural
History.  This position is distinguished by its executive and
administrative responsibility for assisting the Director in managing the
day-to-day operations of the department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS...
--Assists in planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and evaluating the
work of the museum.
--Assists in directing the acquisition, classification, preservation, and
display of historical and scientific museum objects.
--Assists in directing research programs and the conducting of field trips
for the collection of materials in the fields of history and science.
--Assists in directing a continuing exhibit program, including periodic
special exhibits of major importance.
--Assists in directing educational and public relations programs designed
to enhance the public use, understanding and enjoyment of the museum's
facilities.
--Assists in securing materials of value for the museum's collection by
donation, loan, or purchase.
--Assists in directing the operation of related public services such as the
museum library, book shop, lending services and auxiliary staff services,
such as shipping, receiving, maintenance, protection, printing, photography
and accounting.
--Maintains liaison with the Board of Governors and other groups concerned
with the museum, as well as with the Chief Administrative Office and other
County departments.
--Has responsibility for the preparation of the annual budget and the
maintenance of fiscal controls.
--Supervises the housekeeping and auxiliary services of the museum
including shipping, receiving, maintenance, protection, printing,
photography and record keeping.
--Acts for the Director in his absence.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS...
Four years' experience in a highly responsible staff capacity analyzing and
making recommendations for the solution of problems of organization,
procedure, program, budget or personnel -AND- a Master's Degree in public
or business administration or a related field.  Two years of the required
experience must have been as the head of a major division in a recognized
museum.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS...
--Demonstrated knowledge and experience in financial management, human
resources management, and information systems.
--Demonstrated experience in the development and management of government
and non-government grant proposals and funding.
--Demonstrated knowledge of quality improvement principles and processes.
--Demonstrated knowledge and ability to develop and implement a
comprehensive strategic plan.
--Demonstrated experience and ability to develop and maintain strong,
interpersonal, effective relationships with representatives from public and
private organizations.
--Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
--A doctorate degree in any discipline

ANNUAL SALARY...
The salary range for this position is $69,567 - $104,351.  This position is
subject to the provisions of the Performance Based Pay Plan (County Code
Chapter 6.08.300).  In addition, this position may receive a stipend from
the Museum of Natural History Foundation.

SELECTION PROCESS...
The following process will be used to select the Chief Deputy Director,
Museum of Natural History.
--Each candidate's background will be evaluated on the basis of information
submitted to determine the level and scope of the candidate's preparation
for the position.  Candidates with the highest qualifications, as
determined by the screening process, will be invited to the examination
interview.
--The examination interview will be weighted 100% and designed to assess
the candidate's education, experience, personal fitness, and general
ability to perform the duties of the position.
--The names of the most highly qualified candidates, as determined by the
examination interview, will be submitted to the Director of the Los Angeles
County Museum of Natural History, who will make the final appointment.
