I hope you all are doing well, had nice holidays, and have a happy new
year. I have a question for you ... a local potter has a clay (he says
most likely pre Civil War - Civil War 1850s - 1880s) pipe bowl and would
like to know what material the stem would have been. The hole on the
bowl is 1/4" - 5/16" in diameter. All help would be greatly
appreciated.  THANKS!

Most pipe stems I've seen for this type of bowl are made from reed but by
the mid-19th century you could also purchase hard rubber or gutta purcha
stems that look much like stems on modern pipes (having an oblong shape at
the mouth end). Since clay pipe bowls were inexpensive reed, also being
inexpensive, was often the choice.

I hope you all are doing well, had nice holidays, and have a happy new year.
I have a question for you . a local potter has a clay (he says most likely
pre Civil War - Civil War 1850s - 1880s) pipe bowl and would like to know
what material the stem would have been. The hole on the bowl is 1/4" -
5/16" in diameter. All help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Take care,

Jeff

Subject: Software for tracking museum traveling exhibition programs

Hi All--

I tried to post this before the holidays, but got no response. I figured =
I'd
try again!

If anyone can offer any guidance, I would greatly appreciate it

Does anyone know of any software specifically designed or easily adaptabl=
e
for managing a traveling exhibition program? We are looking for a dbase-l=
ike
structure that would allow us to track the status of our six traveling
exhibitions (contracts, location, future bookings, shipping, conditions, =
etc.).=20

I would prefer not to design an Access dbase to perform the functionalit=
y
we need if there is a viable source.

I would really appreciate any input....

Subject: Re: cemetery walks

In response to this thread started last week, I would like to draw your
attention to the Evergreen Cemetery volunteer docent group operating through
the Santa Cruz County Museum of Art and History, in Santa Cruz, CA. A check
with the web site "santacruzmah.org/history" indicates that they are still
doing this, as the museum's governing body does own and administer Evergreen
Cemetery, a now inactive (for burials) pioneer cemetery and historic site.

In the early 1970's if not before, a volunteer group began just as others
have described, by cleaning up the cemetery and doing little presentations
on the more publicized people buried there (all of those buried in the
county's first Protestant cemetery played a role in the "Americanization" of
Santa Cruz). By the 1980s this was a vigorous and popular interpretive
program, and included a cemetery survey with headstone classifications that
I worked on as Curator. Schoolchildren and adults who toured the cemetery
were surrounded by a sense of community place, as every path, every stone
bore a name they now knew as a street, a school, a neighborhood.

The museum's archives held a substantial archive of cemetery records which
became the source for historical interpretation, enhanced by obituaries,
newspaper archives and even medical records. As more volunteers
participated, they took on individual studies of such things as the history
of epidemics, suicides, womens history, and comparative social and ethnic
studies with other cemeteries in the county. It became over time a
well-coordinated, beautifully documented history resource. Among the
lasting benefits were the reversal of interest of a ghoulish cult who had
previously used the cemetery for destructive rituals and soon became its
protectors, and the distribution of FEMA funds for restoration after the
1988 earthquake did incredible damage to many of the carved stone spires and
towering monuments. Also, the meaningful public interpretation inspired the
(guilt-ridden) return of several headstones that had been stolen over the
years.

Please contact MAH through "santacruzmah.org/history" for more information
on the public benefit and response to this activity.

I'm curious about what you all think about this type of program. What
purpose
does it serve? Are they worthwhile, and why? What challenges do you face in
implementation? Do all museums want to put one on? why or why not?

From: "Christopher A. Brown" <[log in to unmask]>
Subject: Re: Co-Directors?

Dear List -- in our experience across the NPO world, co-directors and oth=
er such flexible=20
management structures are widely practiced, in many forms in the museum s=
ector alone,=20
and is one strategy we've advised when applicable.

While titling for these mutual management relationships is as creative an=
d as free-form=20
as jazz, they all are essentially: a division or sharing of authority and=
 responsibility=20
designed to be balanced according to ability and capacity, and intended t=
o be united in=20
achieving a common goal.

The reasons for collaborative management in museums, and the quality of t=
he results,=20
vary as widely as jazz too. As mentioned previously and accurately by Ms.=
 Moore, the=20
difference between the co-directors' roles and responsibilities might be =
determined by=20
talents and preferences, and this pattern of administrative or executive =
functions vs.=20
programming or content functions is common in visual and presenting arts =
organizations.=20
For those and other kinds of institutions, even more factors may come in =
to play when=20
co-directing roles are delineated, such as funding, politics, personal si=
tuations and=20
relationships, and similar practical considerations. One team of co-direc=
tors made their=20
choices based on body morphology: the bigger person handled the largest p=
redatory=20
animals in the collection.

Interestingly, here's one subject where the "youngsters" of the museum se=
ctor --=20
children's museums -- can inform their elders. We have found that childre=
n's museums=20
apply this co-director strategy more often than other kinds of museums be=
cause of=20
specific observable and predictable demographic dynamics and the challeng=
es of new/
emerging institutions (e.g., a talented young mother wants to start a chi=
ldren's museum,=20
but can't spare a full-time commitment). Teaming non-professionals with t=
rained=20
specialists in co-directing relationships this way can help solve issues =
of time,=20
"bandwidth", skills, experience, etc. It helps that children's museums al=
so tend to be=20
more "generalist" than other museum types.=20

However, we have also seen a very successful example of a temporary "co-d=
irectorship"=20
at a research-based natural history museum, where the need was met for a =
short-term=20
duration. So the consideration of co-direction as a short- or long-term s=
trategy is crucial=20
too, to the development of a system that will actually work.

To articulate a suitable and realistic co-management model, beyond the he=
lpful but very=20
general information that a listerv can provide, your friend might want to=
 seek=20
professional planning assistance that tailors a management structure and =
practice=20
designed for the specific needs of the situation.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,=20
