You've quite confused me. Asters are members of tribe Astera of
Family Compositae. At least in Phillip Munz and David Keck's _A
California Flora_ (UC press 1973). It has been over twenty years since I
studied field botany and ecology. Unfortunately I only have time to dust
off the book every couple of years or so...

You are quite correct about the mustard, my faulty memory assigned the
mustards to Compositae instead of the Cruciferae. Mea culpa. (All I had
to do was visualize a mustard blossom too. :0)
