Folks,

I am posting this for someone else. If you are interested in this program,
please contact Amy Flatten at [log in to unmask] I believe they are
still looking for programs and partners.

The Office of Science and Technology Policy of the Executive Office of the
President has joined with representatives from over 27 public and private
organizations to develop activities for this yearıs Global Science and
Technology Week (GSTW), taking place April 28 May 4, 2002. The theme of
GSTW 2002 will be:

"Science and Technology: Serving our Global Community."

To underscore this yearıs GSTW theme, activities and materials have been
created by participating organizations to help parents, teachers,
scientists, engineers and mathematicians excite K-12 students about math and
science. The activities will be available after March 31, 2002, through the
GSTW website at <www.ostp.gov/html/gstw.html>.

The GSTW partners would like to encourage educators and parents to engage
students in these activities during GSTW, April 28 - May 4, 2002, as it is
hoped that webcasts and classroom exercises will help stimulate student
thinking about the ways scientists, technologists and everyday citizens, can
use math and science to serve their global community. Moreover, it is
hoped that the GSTW activities will ignite student interest in math and
science by:

… drawing attention to the many ways their lives are enhanced by scientific
and technological advances;
… stressing the many ways that young people themselves can apply science and
technology to benefit their community, their country and their planet;
… highlighting the international nature of science, and stressing the
importance of math and science education in todayıs era of globalization;
and
… emphasizing how U.S. citizens benefit from international scientists of
diverse backgrounds and cultures working together to solve the complex
problems of our day--underscoring how our own Nation needs a diversity of
students to strive for excellence in math and science, regardless of race,
gender or ethnicity.

Thus, it is hoped that GSTW will help U.S. students appreciate that by
studying math and science in their local communities, young Americans are
also part of a larger international science and technology enterprise. The
GSTW activities and programs created for April 28 - May 4, 2002, will allow
U.S. students to better recognize that their interest in science and
technology is shared by young people around the globe--that science and
mathematics provides a universal language. And through their interest in
math and science, Americaıs students will not only strengthen their Nation,
they can work together to build a better world.

Background information regarding last yearıs GSTW 2001 activities,
educational material and public endorsements from the Presidentıs Cabinet
and other members of the scientific community can be found at
www.ostp.gov/html/gstw.html. The GSTW 2002 site will be available by March
31, 2002, and will reflect GSTW 2002 activities and materials as they are
finalized.
