Exhibition Design and Installation

Dates:  April 16-21, 2012 (on-campus at the University of Victoria)

Since exhibitions are the public face of your museum they should inspire powerful visitor experiences that convey your institution's mission and philosophy. This intensive course examines planning, designing, fabricating, and installing interpretive exhibitions that encourage museum visitor's understanding, participation, and emotional engagement. Field work, team development and presentation of an exhibition design proposal, and layout of a showcase with an interactive element provide you with opportunities to build exhibition planning and design skills.   

You will consider:
 *The evolution and roles of exhibitions
 *visitor needs and characteristics
 *managing the creative process: what are responsibilities of the team? what are the phases of the schedule?
 *critiquing exhibitions: what makes a successful exhibition?
 *presenting objects and ideas: communicating through stories
 *design tools: communicating your concepts, controlling traffic flow, the importance of sight lines, rhythm, color, texture, and lighting
 *the power of graphics: wall text and design
 *testing it it: peer review, visitor feedback - before, during, remedial
 *choosing media: current trends vs. traditional values

Registration Deadline: March 19, 2012, late registrations accepted if space permits

Fee: CAD $681 (credit and non-credit options) 

Instructor:  James Volkert, principal of Exhibition Associates, a museum exhibition development and facility planning firm, has developed and installed more than 350 museum exhibitions on a variety of subjects in the arts, sciences, and history. He has served as a consultant to museums nationally in the development of exhibitions, programs, and architectural development and has worked with museums in Argentina, Canada, Germany, Guatemala, Taiwan, Sweden, Uruguay, and Peru.
