I want to thank Lonn Taylor for his fine remarks about the Spottsylvania
stump. It really is a fascinating object with a heart-wrenching story behind
it. It's too bad many visitors to NMAH miss it; I wish it could be placed
more prominently, dead ahead in front of the escalator to the museum's third
floor, rather than off to the side. Washingtonians who read the Post may
have been amused some weeks ago by columnist Jonathan Yardley's difficulty in
finding it (although a more dramatic placement would be a boon, it isn't that
hard to locate).

If I may be permitted a little tribute, Lonn retired from the museum just a
few weeks ago, but his absence is deeply felt already. He's a real curator's
curator, and a terrific guy. I'm glad he's on this list, and hope that his
retirement will afford him more time to contribute words of wisdom.

Lonn, did I tell you where to send the check?
