I checked with our former Collections Manager of 15 years who passed along
some advice I thought might be helpful. Here's what she had to say about
storing furs:

If you can store the furs in cold storage, do so. We pay to have many of our
furs stored this way by a local furrier. Otherwise, keeping them in climate
controlled storage in acid free boxes should be sufficient for the smaller
furs. What is important is that they don't get too hot or have the humidity
get too high for extended periods of time. The heat dries them out and makes
them stiff...the humidity rots the leather and the hair falls out. If your
humidity is controlled, the metal clasps
shouln't be an issue, but to be on the safe side it might be a good idea to
wrap the clasps in acid free tissue for storage...removing them compromises
the originality of the garment and lets you into the possibility of losing
the pieces.
