The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion courses for professionals in museums, heritage planning and related organizations:


Studies in Building Conservation: Wood
The wooden materials, which shape both modest and monumental structures, are subject to the ravages of time, climate, inherent vice, insects and fungi. This intensive course develops your ability to manage the preservation and conservation of wooden materials and structures through both lectures and field studies, with special emphasis on: 
        *       characteristics of wood; wood chemistry and physics 
        *       structural characteristics of historic wooden framed buildings 
        *       environmental impacts and inherent vice 
        *       bio-deterioration
        *       inspecting wooden structures and analyzing materials 
        *       approaches to stabilization and preservation 
        *       wood preservatives and pesticides
        *       identifying treatment requirements 
        *       preventive maintenance 
Instructor: Martin Weaver is Director of the Center for Preservation Research at Columbia University and has extensive international consulting experience in building conservation. 
Dates: June 2 to June 7 2003, with a preparatory assignment

Strategic Information Management in Museums
Museums hold a wealth of diverse information that is increasingly recognized as a key institutional and community resource. Recognizing the dimensions, value, and potential of this information and planning for its strategic integration and management provide the focus for this new immersion course. Whether you work with collections, research, programming, marketing and audience development, or management within a museum or heritage setting, this course strengthens your ability to:
        *       define the types of information managed across your institution
        *       recognize its current and potential strategic value to the institution and to the communities it serves
        *       appreciate the role of computer and web-based information systems to organize, process, and access information
        *       identify opportunities to integrate information to enhance its use and value, and to generate innovative perspectives
        *       apply principles of strategic planning to identify information management opportunities and strategies
        *       identify resources (human and other) required to accomplish your strategic goals

Planning for Community Cultural Stewardship
Planning that recognizes and integrates community needs and values is the key to the successful preservation of a wide range of cultural resources. This course emphasizes the principles of strategic, action, and business planning as a framework for:
        *       defining the core values of the organization or program
        *       reviewing and analyzing the current situation
        *       developing vision and mission statements
        *       setting goals and objectives
        *       assessing implementation options
        *       defining budget, information, and personnel requirements
        *       developing and implementing public participation programs
        *       understanding the principles of dispute resolution
        *       understanding issues in leadership, working with volunteers, time management
        *       integrating these elements in a cohesive plan for community cultural stewardship
This course is of special interest to people working in urban heritage conservation, community heritage, First Nations heritage, heritage sites and community museums. It focuses on two separate but inter-related concepts: it introduces the principles and practices of strategic planning for cultural resource managers and practitioners, and it examines the methodology of developing public participation programs as an integral part of the planning process.
Instructor: Alastair Kerr is a specialist in heritage and strategic planning with the British Columbia Heritage Branch and is the President of the Victoria Civic Heritage Trust
Dates: August 18 to 23, 2003, with preparatory assignment
