It's a little later than you wanted, but the Museum of the American
Philosophical Society in Philadelphia has a model of the USS Peacock,
the sloop-of-war that was the second-largest vessel of the 1838-42 U.
S. Exploring Expedition. The US Ex Ex, as it was known, explored the
Pacific and the mouth of Columbia River. There, in 1841, the Peacock
was lost after it grounded on a sandbar. The APS's model will be on
exhibition until December 2008. It's a nice model, and has a clear
link to Oregon history and exploration of the Columbia (though not,
alas, to Gray).
