There are a few institutions/exhibits that offer a very different
perspective on a familiar topic.  I believe you already alluded to the
varied interpretation at the site of the Battle of Little Big
Horn/Custer's Last Stand, but here are some others to consider:

1.  Baltimore History Museum (or is it the Maryland Historical Society?)
had a temporary exhibit a couple years ago curated by an
African-American artist, which re-interpreted objects in their
collections.  It had an extensive review in either Museum News or
History News several years ago, and my friends who saw it gave it rave
reviews.

2.  There is a traveling exhibit on an 18th century slave ship (a
commercial exhibit, I believe), which generated some controversy in
southern California when the "official" labels were
removed/edited/replaced with others developed by the local
African-American community.
