The very recently completed (and long-awaited!) "Smithsonian Guidelines
for Accessible Exhibition Design" gives the following "Accessible Type"
chart for Helvetica regular:

Probable viewing distance.........X-height...........Minimum point size:

less than 75 mm/3 inches.........4.5 mm / 3/16 in...........24 point
1 m/39 in....................................9 mm / 3/8 in.................48 point
2 m/78 in....................................19 mm / 3/4 in...............100 point
3 m/118 in...................................28 mm / 1-1/8 in...........148 point
