Collections Assistant
Job Type: Full time, year round
Salary: $25,500 annually, benefits included

Job Summary:
The Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum is a county museum which includes a 1909 Carnegie Library building, a 1957 museum building, and a 1916 homestead cabin. The museum is host to annual visitors, booked programs, special events, and casual groups. The museum seeks to fill the position of Museum Assistant to help with the proper documentation and management of the museum’s broad-ranging collection that includes decorative arts, wagons and carriages, photography, Native American items, textiles, and other artifacts.

Job Tasks:
1 Assist with data entry and updating of catalogue record in the museum’s collections management system
2 Participate in project research, exhibit planning and design, preparation of artifacts, fabrication of mounts, installation, scanning, and digital photography
3 Assist the Registrar in all aspects of collections management
4 Assist with support for special events and other programs as required
5 Research and respond to collections inquiries and external researcher inquiries
6 Supervise part-time staff, temporary staff, interns and volunteers as directed
7 Responsible for monitoring and maintaining a safe and organized work environment

Qualifications:
1 Bachelor degree or higher in museum studies, American history, or other applicable field
2 Three years experience in a cultural institution
3 Knowledge of museum registration processes and standards including applicable laws and ethical codes as set forth by AAM (e.g. Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, tax requirements for charitable donations, AAM’s Accreditation Commission’s Expectations for Collections Stewardship)
4 Strong computer skills and proficiency with collections management databases software
5 Good verbal/written communication skills, attention to detail, excellent organization skills , strong team work skills, but an ability to work independently
6 Some physical activity such as climbing ladders, lifting boxes up to 50 pounds, and kneeling is required, as are occasional evening and weekend hours, and occasional hours in the museum store
