Planning for Community Cultural Stewardship
October 23-28 with Alastair Kerr
Offered through the Cultural Resource Management Program, University of
Victoria

We're pleased to be offering this course for individuals involved with
community planning in the cultural heritage sector. Please let us know if
you would like to receive further information! We recommend you register
early as spaces are filling up.

Course Description

Planning that recognizes and integrates community needs and values is your
key to successful preservation programs if you work in urban heritage
conservation, community heritage, First Nations heritage, and heritage
sites. This intensive course emphasizes the principles of strategic planning
as a framework for:

* reviewing and analyzing your resources, context and issues
* developing a vision and writing a mission statement
* setting realistic goals and objectives
* reviewing and selecting implementation options
* defining budget
* information and personnel requirements
* undertaking a public participation program
* issues in leadership, working with volunteers, time management and dispute
resolution
* elements of a heritage management plan

You will undertake an assignment based on a local heritage project or
program. This material will be addressed and integrated throughout the
course. As a course outcome, you will develop an outline of a strategic plan
for your program or project.

Instructor: Alastair Kerr is a specialist in heritage and strategic planning
with the British Columbia Heritage Branch and is the President of the
Victoria Civic Heritage Trust. He is the author of "Heritage Planning: A
Guide for Local Government", and has extensive experience facilitating
community-based heritage planning initiatives.

Dates: October 23-28, 2000 with a preparatory assignment

Fee: $589 (Canadian funds, credit or non-credit options)

Please register by: September 29 (late registrations accepted if space
permits)

Travel: Victoria is easily accessible from Seattle and Vancouver

Accommodation: Program staff are pleased to provide information on local
B&B, hotel, and on-campus options
