My memory, too, is a tad faulty, but I believe I read descriptions of the
Buzkashi game in Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man."  It took place in a
central Asian republic (Uzbek? Turkmenistan?), and consisted of nomadic
horsemen playing a soccer-like game with the carcass of a goat.  Bronowski
attributed it to one culture, descended from hunter-gatherers, asserting
their superiority over the yostart agricultural societies.

I believe it was also discussed in Natural History magazine at some point in
the last couple of years.  If I get a chance, I'll try to find the
references, and stop wasting everyone's time with these half-remembered
citations.
