The groundhog is beloved (and hated) of the PA Germans. The "Grundsau
Lodsch" is a men's organization that exists to preserve the PA German
dialect -- the have meetings throughout SE PA in winter and spring annually,
where much delicious food is consumed, and "earthy" skits are performed
(read, lots of manure references, human and animal, and other
interpretations of musical human orifices). Hilarity ensues for those who
can understand the dialect. The Lodges have a pledge in which each fellow
holds up his hands like a groundhog sitting on his hindparts, and they
recite "Ich bin ein Bruder Grundsau."
Dr. Don Yoder, noted PA German folklorist, recently wrote "Groundhog Day"
published by Stackpole Books, which explores the love/hate relationship
Pennsylvanians have with these naughty fellows.
Ach, it wonders me sometimes!
