This site is looking at innovative ways to increase the level of
"interpretive" light in our historically furnished rooms while staying within
museum standards.

We have several areas with many different situations - a Victorian home with
40 watt bulbs and dark green shades constantly pulled - creating a very dim
atmosphere. Most windows have a lexan barrier which is great at blocking UV
but creates a microenvironment very harmful to the window, sash. Also a
bunkhouse - historically had one bulb hanging from the ceiling which will
soon be reconnected to power, shades drawn. A tack room with the same
situation of one light bulb, and a "hall of mirrors" effect created by floor
to ceiling plexiglass barriers just inside the door. Finally a barn with
horse drawn vehicle exhibit, historic lighting fixtures all over the place
and a window in each stall, presently covered with burlap.

We are discussing a number of options. Opening/closing shades as the sun and
seasons change. Maybe some new wonder bulb that looks like a regular old
incandescent, but is some fiberoptics dream come true. Maybe some
non-historic back lighting or spot light behind the scenes. Perhaps those UV
filtering shades which allows light in.

What are you other historic home site curators doing? Any suggestions for
contacts - am thinking of bringing in a consultant but most seem to know
traditional museum exhibit lighting, not special needs of historically
furnished rooms? Publications? Web sites?

Thanks for any guidance you might have for us,
