DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART

The North Carolina Museum of Art seeks an energetic,
resourceful, and visionary leader to oversee an
ambitious program of museum-based and outreach
education for a diverse statewide public. This is an
excellent opportunity for someone to make an indelible
mark on a dynamic institution in a progressive,
livable, diverse, and culturally rich community.

Founded in 1947 as the state’s art museum, the NCMA
presents one of the finest art collections in the
Southeast, with particular strengths in European,
American, and Modern and Contemporary Art, as well as
notable collections of Egyptian, Classical,
Sub-Saharan African, Pre-Columbian, and Judaic Art.
The NCMA is currently developing an adjacent 160+ acre
park featuring an amphitheater and outdoor cinema,
biking and walking trails, and sites for permanent and
temporary art projects. In addition, plans are far
advanced for a major expansion of its facility
offering exceptional opportunities for innovative
education programs.

The Director of Education should be first and foremost
a teacher and a passionate advocate for the arts and
arts education. The DoE reports to the Director and
is a member of the Museum’s senior management team.
Primary responsibilities include shaping and
articulating the Museum’s overall educational mission;
overseeing the development and implementation of
effective programs in fulfillment of that mission;
fostering a creative and productive team of 12
professionals and a corps of volunteers; supervising
the departmental budget and the department’s
grant-writing initiatives; and developing effective
educational collaborations and partnerships within and
without the Museum.

The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree
(Ph.D. preferred) in art history, art education, or a
related field, and extensive experience in
progressively responsible positions in an art museum
or comparable institution. The position requires
strong management and communication skills;
flexibility; vision matched by pragmatism; and the
ability to work collegially with professional staff
and volunteers, academic and school leaders, and
diverse community groups. Also required is a
demonstrated commitment to diversity, in staffing,
programs, and community engagement. Mastery of
current educational theory and practice is essential,
as is familiarity with technology-enhanced learning.
Fluency in at least one foreign language is desirable.

This is a state government position with excellent
benefits and salary commensurate with experience. The
position is statutorily exempt from provisions of the
State Personnel Act. Applicants are required to use
the state government form available at:
