Stephen Rowley will host a chat on Business and Art. Some of what
will be covered:

Traditionally artists position themselves to be seen as the antithesis
of business. However, the artist is by necessity a business person
whether he/she recognises it or not. A point recognised (and despised)
by Australian artist Ian Burn.

"Not only do works of art end up as commodities, there is an
overwhelming sense in which works of art start as commodities." Burn
continues... "The concept of what is and is not acceptable as 'work' is
defined first and foremost by the market and only secondly by creative
urges." Two quotes that I feel are as relevant now as when he wrote them
in 1975.

In the Chat I would like to consider a number of aspects of the
relationship between business and art. We may not cover them all, but
the list of topics below should provide the basis for an interesting
session. I would like the chat to be interactive as possible - so let's
hear you.

A) Artist as business person - a model
** R&D ** Pre-production **Production ** QA **Marketing ** Finance
B) The Artist as Star
C) Art - Product or Merchandise
D) The Art Market -
"...what strip mining is to nature, the art market is to culture"
(Robert Hughes)
** Art about business - Warhol, Haake, Staton...
** Jeff Koons - Hero or villain
** Why do businesses sponsor art?
** How can I market my art?
