You may be able to find some references in Douglas A. Harper's sociological
field study of tramps, _Good Company_, published in 1982 by the University
of Chicago Press. There are also some very fine photographs in this book. 
He is currently teaching at the Department of Sociology, Duquesne University
Pittsburgh, PA 15282.
