Dear Museum- L,

Yesterday I posted an announcement about the creation of a new American
Association of Museums SPC and the recruitment of board members. Several
of you wanted more information about membership too. What follows is some
background about the group, its development, and intended goals, plus the
membership information towards the end. Questions or comments about the
group can be directed to me, or Polly Nordstrand, at
[log in to unmask] As the outgoing co-chair of the Diversity
Coalition, I am happy to help.

Sincerely,

Tania Said
Director
The Bead Museum

At the May Annual Meeting in New Orleans, the AAM Board of Directors
granted provisional approval to the Standing Professional Committee for
Diversity in Museums. The Committee, comprised of new members, will elect
a provisional board (one year term) who will develop a plan for the future
work of the committee. The committee seeks to engage a membership made up
of all facets of museum work.

The Diversity Committee represents, recognizes, and embraces the
increasingly diverse constituencies that member museums serve or seek to
serve, and ensures greater representation and leadership from such
constituencies throughout the museum profession. The Diversity Committee
advances this mission through representation within the programs and
governance of the AAM, by providing educational programming, products and
publications, leadership initiatives, and fellowships.

In order to promote the inclusive meaning of diversity, the committee
adopted the following definition: ¡§diversity¡¨ means maximum inclusion,
respecting and appreciating the differences in ethnicity, gender, national
or regional origin, disability, age, religion, economic status and/or
sexual orientation.

By joining, you will be able to remain current on diversity initiatives in
the museum field and learn strategies for advancing diversity in your own
institution. You will also be able to network with other professionals
interested in your endeavors. Contact the AAM Membership office for any
other information about joining at [log in to unmask]
