I have friends that commute in to DC from Hagerstown and it's an hour and 10 minutes each way without traffic. Frederick is about an hour with no traffic and Hapers Ferry is about an hour and a half with no traffic. I alos know people who commute in from Martinsburg, WV which is 2 hours away via commuter rail.

I don't know about you but I'm not willing to spend over 10 hours a week commuting to my job. Even if I had a nice place with more than reasonable rent, I'd never be able to enjoy it because I'd spend most of my time during the week commuting.

And the commuting costs of living that far out almost negate the money saved in rent. The commuter rail would be over $200/month just for the train and if you had to catch metro it would add another $50 to you commuting bill. Gas would run you over $100/month not to mention the wear on your car. So a nice deal of an apartment that is $500 out in the boonies, really adds up to a $600-$750 apartment with the extra cost of commuting. I know there are a few places around here that are that much, esp. if you live in DC or with one roommate, which wouldn't be too bad.
