Dear Althea Travis,
Yes, P.S. 1 is a former public school which has been turned in to a
museum/alternative art exhibition space.  The renovation has retained the
character of the old school building, and the place has a free-spirited approach
to exhibiting art...there's even some art down in the old boiler room and an
installation using plastic garbage bags up in the attic.  It's open Tues. -
Sunday, and hours are ????  I know it's open 12 - 6 on Sunday because that's when
I went.
Hope I hear from some more alternative art institutions that have done some
interesting things in response to changes in the art world.  My article will be in
the August or September issue of SCULPTURE magazine.  Glenn Harper the editor is
planning a whole issue on museum for the new millenium.  Thanks for your
