Position Announcement
Illinois State Museum

Position Title: Exhibits Design Chief (Curator, rank dependent on 
credentials), Illinois State Museum (Full-time, State Funded)

Work Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, IL

Job Description: The Exhibits Design Chief oversees and implements the 
Museum's physical exhibition program in art, history, anthropology, and 
the natural sciences. Oversees exhibition projects from conception 
through design and installation; leads or co-leads exhibition teams with 
diverse staff; interfaces with external consultants and contractors on 
exhibition projects; and oversees exhibition section staff.

Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelor's (BA or BFA) degree in a field 
related to exhibition design such as design, scene design, theatre 
design, or a related discipline is required. MA, MFA, or related 
coursework and training are desirable. At least five years design 
experience with art, history, anthropology, and/or natural history 
exhibitions required. Five years experience working in a progressively 
responsible design and exhibition position in a museum or related 
institution preferred. Familiarity with ADA requirements required and 
familiarity with green and eco-friendly products preferred. Must be able 
to demonstrate proficiency with current design and fabrication 
approaches and technologies, including relevant software and hardware. 
Applicant must have the ability to develop creative conceptual drawings, 
exhibition floor plans and designs, and construction plans and drawings. 
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated 
creativity are required. Applicant must be able to lead or co-lead 
exhibition teams with the administrative, curatorial, education, 
technical and support staff in an adaptable, collaborative, and 
professional manner. Must have experience working with external 
evaluators, other consultants, and contractors on exhibition projects. 
Position requires a willingness to work extra hours to meet scheduled 
deadlines as necessary.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
