"Earthquake Lake" Focus of Exhibit at Customs House Museum

Clarksville, TN – Reelfoot Lake, one of America’s natural phenomena located
in northwestern Tennessee, is the focus of Reelfoot Lake: Tradition,
Mystery & Lore, an exhibition at Customs House Museum & Cultural Center
from now through June 30, 2005. Encompassing three galleries, the museum's
most ambitious installation to date includes a broad sampling of the lake’s
environment, history, agriculture, gaming aspects, art and artifacts.

Formed by a series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812, Reelfoot Lake has been
a haven for naturalists, wildfowl hunters and fishing enthusiasts for
several generations. Included in the Customs House exhibit are vintage and
contemporary examples of the patented Calhoun “stumpjumper” boats, a unique
watercraft featuring a flat shallow draft bottom and bow-facing rowing
mechanism, specially designed and built by four generations of the Calhoun
family for navigating the lake’s shallow depths. Numerous original
photographs of the lake have been selected from the Sabin and Ganier
collections at the Tennessee State Library and Archives for the exhibit,
which also includes the entire seventy-one year series of Ducks Unlimited
Federal Stamp art, rare Reelfoot duck calls, and even a full-scale antique
Reelfoot duck blind.

The exhibit catalogue includes articles written by game call historian,
author, and call maker Howard Harlan, and Reelfoot authorities including
Wade Bourne, Dr. F. Jack Hurley, Dr. Robert Cogswell, Dr. Winifred L.
Smith, William L. Lawrence and Larry W. Hickerson.

As a companion to the exhibit Customs House Museum and cinematographer Rick
Goodwin produced a short original film about the lake, which blends still
photographs, antique film, and contemporary footage with spoken text by
renowned storyteller Minton Sparks and a musical soundtrack by the
bluegrass band Nickel Creek.

Reelfoot Lake: Tradition, Mystery & Lore is sponsored by Orgain Building
Supply, Wyatt-Johnson Automotive, Ducks Unlimited and Tennessee Arts
Commission. Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is a non-profit museum
located at 200 S. Second Street in historic downtown Clarksville,
Tennessee. Regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and
Sunday 1 to 5 pm. Regular admission rates are adults $4; seniors 55+ $3;
college students $2; ages 6-18 $1; and free for ages 5 and younger.
Admission is free on Sundays. Free parking for museum visitors is available
