I attended the NEDCC School for Scanning last year, and although it may seem
to be targeted solely to paper-based collections (e.g., books, journals,
photographs), there's a lot that managers of 3D collections can use. You
won't learn how to scan or what specific scanners to use--that information
changes too rapidly. Instead, you'll learn about the major issues in
digitizing collections (2D or 3D)--access, permanence, preservation, image
quality, copyright, data base structure--that will guide collection managers
and administrators for years to come. The best thing I learned is that when
developing a digitized collection, that last thing you do is buy a scanner.
