Here at Chicago Children's Museum (where interaction from our staff is a
must), we recently changed titles from Floor Staff (boring and unclear) to
Interpretive Staff. "Interpretive Staff" seems to truly reflect the duties
of staff on the museum floor.

At the Fort Gibson Historic Site, our ID badges read Interprative
Staff,
although the classification is still Historic Properties Site
Attendant.
The public seems to react well to this.

Subject: Museum attendants by any other name?

        >Hello! We're changing the job descriptions of what used to be known
as
        >our museum attendants to give them a more multi-functional, active
role
        >in interpretation, exhibition development, collections care, etc.
Along
        >with this shift in emphasis we're keen to move away from the
"museum
        >attendant" title, towards something more in tune with the new role.
        >Various ideas have been proposed, none of which seem to fit the
bill:
        >information assistants (too techie), museum assistants (too
        >behind-the-scenes), guides (too girlie), visitor interpreters
(eeuuch!).
        >Any body out there with a good, viable, and acceptable solution?
        >
        >yours in anticipation of some truly excellent ideas...
