Museums in Albany, New York? Don't miss the chance to attend any of the
(6) six pre-conference workshops available in Albany, New York on
October 26 and 27, 2002. Several of the workshops are free of charge! To

All workshops will be hosted in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown
Albany, unless otherwise indicated. Here's summary of the workshops
available:

Saturday, October 26 - 9:00 AM -  12:00 PM
Bridging Differences: The Role Museums Can Play in Conflict Resolution
Programs
Complimentary - Registration Required
Facilitator: Stevie Engelke, Teacher Services Manager, Smithsonian
Center for Education and Museum Studies, Smithsonian Institution,
Washington, D.C.
Listening, observing, predicting consequences, and recognizing varying
points of view--these skills can help transform conflicts and museums
provide students with unique opportunities to build them. Explore how
museum experiences help students develop empathy, analyze issues of
intercultural understanding and social justice, and practice effective
mediation techniques. Based on a 3-day teacher seminar developed by
the Smithsonian in partnership with classroom educators, this workshop
supports conflict resolution programs currently in place in many school
districts.

Building on Your Best: Appreciative Inquiry

What’s really working well in your museum?  What challenges are you
facing? Traditional problem solving considers the organization as if it
were made up of mechanical parts, looks for what’s broken, and fixes it.
Traditionally, change management fails to consider the human complexity
that generates value through knowledge, experience, and relationships.
This preconference workshop introduces the philosophy and techniques
of Appreciative Inquiry (AI). AI focuses on the conditions of success and
strengthens those conditions. Learn how AI can be applied to various
aspects of museum operations and management.

management. Learn easy and realistic ways to better manage your time
to achieve personal, departmental, and even organizational goals.

Traveling Exhibitions from A to Z: Coming to a Community Near You
Fee: $35  - Registration Required

Museums are active  participants of our global community and multi-
cultural society. Traveling exhibitions are an excellent way for museums to
attract diverse audiences, advance their mission, and contribute to
earned income.  Learn how to launch or host a single traveling exhibition
or to develop a traveling exhibition program.  Review the nuts-and-bolts of
planning, budgeting, funding, and marketing. Presentations will
emphasize culturally specific and cross-cultural exhibitions, as well as
placing exhibitions in non-traditional venues.  The workshop fee includes
numerous hand-outs and resource information.

Leadership through Diversity: Building Audiences and Strengthening the
Workforce in Museums

Education and Museum Studies, Washington, DC
Do your museum board, staff, and volunteers understand the concept of
cultural competency and recognize the link between audience and
diversity? To enhance this understanding and improve communication
skills, the American Association of Museums (AAM) and the Smithsonian
Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) present "Leadership
Through Diversity."  Examine how cultural competency impacts museums
and motivates the leadership skills in all of us.  Participants will receive a
copy of the AAM/SCEMS Diversity in Museums Toolkit, complete with
resources on diversity, leadership, and change management.

Planning for and Surviving Construction

Most museum professionals will play a major role in a significant
construction project, either renovation or new construction, at some point
in their careers.  Such projects are complex but this session will provide
attendees with a notebook of tools to guide construction projects, from
initial conception to evaluation.
