MER's annual forum for new ideas and original research in all areas
relevant to museum education is an opportunity to introduce individual
research projects or reflections. This year, MER has selected "Museums
and Technology" as our programming theme. The American Association of
Museum's Annual Meeting theme is "Competing in the Arena: Content,
Creativity, and Cooperation." Poster session proposals from these areas
are encouraged, although other topics may be submitted for consideration.
The format for presenting research features:
* invited presentations: Researchers in the museum field will present
their research, discuss their findings, and reflect on the process.
* poster sessions: present your research in an informal setting that
encourages discussion and feedback from fellow museum professionals.

PLEASE SEE GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS BELOW.
MER's annual forum for new ideas and original research in all areas
relevant to education in museums is an opportunity to introduce
individual research projects or reflections. The new format for the 1997
colloquium encourages the sharing of research through poster sessions.
This research could address, but is not limited to, the following:
* Historical Inquiry: researching the origins or practices pertaining to
museum education
* Theoretical Application: researching the scope of an idea or concept
* Applied Research: testing hypotheses through museum education practice
Research must be completed or nearing completion at the time of
submission according to the format outlined below.
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES: The poster session proposal must describe your
research according to the following two to three-page format.
A. ABSTRACT: 5 or 6 sentences that include
1. A statement of purpose or objective(s) of the research
2. A description of participants, if appropriate
3. A brief description of the method
4. A summary of results
B. RELEVANCE OF RESEARCH: A few sentences that address whether the
study is an extension of previous knowledge or tests and explores new
ideas.
C. METHOD: A brief description of how the problem was addressed,
including:
1. A description of the participants, concepts, and/or materials.
2. A description of the research design (experimental design, survey,
historical research, etc.)
3. A description of the procedure -- what the subjects did or what was
done to them during the research investigation; where, when, and who
conducted the research; how and what data were collected and analyzed.
4. A brief summary of results and how they will be reported (graph,
tables, charts)
5. Implications for museum education.
D. PRESENTATION: Identify how you plan to present your research in a
poster format.
