Researcher/Writer

Museums and Collections Services, an innovative service unit of the
University of Alberta, seeks a dynamic, versatile and creative individual to
participate in a comprehensive research project on the University's diverse
collections. Museums and Collections Services is developing a number of
information and outreach projects derived from collections-based research
and history. Established in 1908, the University's collections are
multi-disciplinary and are housed in various academic units and buildings
across campus where they are used in teaching, research and community
service.

The Researcher/Writer will work in a team-based collaborative environment,
reporting to the Manager, Communication Program, Museums and Collections
Services.  The researcher/writer will:
*       develop, recommend and implement research strategies identifying methods,
resources and timelines to meet established project goals;
*       conduct research that identifies visual resources and didactic information
related to collections history and current teaching and research
initiatives;
*       develop written information for communication products including temporary
exhibits, print materials, and web-based initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree in English, History,
Journalism or a related discipline, with three to five years applied
experience.  The candidate will have excellent written and oral
communications skills, be organized and computer literate. Must have the
ability to work independently or on team-based projects. Familiarity with
the University of Alberta or other post-secondary institutions would be an
asset, as would familiarity with museums or related organizations.

This is a six month contract position with the possibility of renewal,
subject to funding.  The monthly salary for this position will commensurate

Web Developer

Museums and Collections Services, an innovative service unit of the
University of Alberta, seeks a dynamic and versatile individual to
participate in the development of two web-based initiatives that will
provide global access to the University's diverse collections.  Through the
"Museums on Campus" website, access will be provided to collections
databases, resources, information, and learning tools and products. Museums
and Collections Services is also a partner in a SunSITE initiative entitled
Virtual Collections, which will provide innovative access to collections
research and programs. The University's collections are multi-disciplinary,
and are housed in various academic units and buildings across campus where
they are used in teaching, research and community service.

The Web Developer will work in a team-based collaborative environment,
reporting to the Manager, Communication Program, Museums and Collections
Services.  The Web Developer will participate in the creation of the web
architecture and information structure for both initiatives; recommend web
strategies that maximize learning opportunities; advise on technological
solutions; implement web solutions including programming; ensure
functionality of web initiatives; and contribute to the development of
ongoing strategies for web site management.

The ideal candidate will have a university degree in graphic design,
instructional design, educational technology or a related discipline, with a
minimum of three years experience. Expertise working with web development
hardware and software, HTML, Javascript, Multimedia on the Web, Adobe
Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, and database connectivity on the Web (Oracle
databases-residing on a Sun Enterprise 450, running Solaris O/S-accessed by
Windows NT client machines distributed across campus). It would be
beneficial to have knowledge relating to learning theory, object based
learning, web navigation, information architecture and organizational
principles.  The candidate will have excellent written and oral
communications skills. Familiarity with the University of Alberta or other
post-secondary institutions would be an asset, as would familiarity with
museums or related organizations.
