Good afternoon!

I am writing in search of professional guidance. I have just started as the
rights and reproductions person in my museum, and have already come across
some situations where an understanding of the prices quoted by other
museums would help me tremendously in negotiating with my clients here. My
predecessor did leave behind a basic price list for most run-of-the-mill
cases, but especially with bigger requests it is not very helpful. I am
hoping you could give me an estimate or some examples of what any of you
have charged your clients - with full discretion, of course.

An example of a case that I found hard to price: A school text book in
print and electronic formats, including without limitation CD-ROMs, DVDs
and other portable electronic devices, websites, and similar techonologies.
Initial clearance 500,000 print run, plus the right to configure the
student and teacher material in alternative formats such as hardcover,
softcover, etc. Territory all of North America (Canada included) and all US
territories and dependencies etc.

Especially the variety of electronic media threw me off guard, as well as
the right to configure the format of the material. They requested only one
image.

I would appreciate any advice on this matter. Please reply off-list if you
wish.

Thank you!
