The inauguration of the 19th century Laboratorio Chimico of the
University of Lisbon in 2006 provides an opportunity to explore and discuss
challenges related to the role of scientific heritage in the history of
science in general and the history of chemistry in particular.

Speakers include:

Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, Historian of Science at the Université de Paris
X (keynoyte); Robert Anderson, Historian of Science, University of
Cambridge, and former Director of the British Museum (keynote);

Marco Beretta, Historian of Science, University of Bologna, and
Vice-Director of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza Florence;

Ursula Klein, Director of the Research Group on the History and Philosophy
of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Max Planck Institute for the History of
Science, Berlin;

Liba Taub, Historian of Science and Director of the Whipple Museum of the
University of Cambridge;

Steven de Clercq, Vice-Chair of UMAC (Committee for University Museums and
Collections of ICOM, the International Council of Museums) and former
Director of Utrecht University Museum;

Christoph Meinel, Historian of Science at the University of Regensburg;

Alan Rocke, Henry Eldridge Bourne Professor of History, Case Western Reserve
University (EUA);

Antonio Garcia Belmar, Historian of Science at the University of Alicante.

Fernando Bragança Gil, founder and former Director of the Museum of Science
of the University of Lisbon;

Graça-Santa Bárbara, Responsible for the Restoration of the 19th century
Laboratorio Chimico, University of Lisbon;

Pedro Casaleiro, Responsible for the Restoration of the 18th century
Laboratorio Chimico, University of Coimbra.

2ND CALL FOR PAPERS

We are currently inviting submissions for oral and poster presentations
pertaining to research, interpretation and promotion of 19th century
chemical heritage (collections, archives and historic spaces), with
particular emphasis on:
- bridging the gap between the history of ideas in chemistry and the
material culture of chemistry;
- historians of chemistry and collection-based research;
- the material culture of chemistry and the training of historians and
museum professionals;
- relations between chemical collections and archives;
- interpretation of historical spaces and collections;
- biographies of spaces and objects in the history of chemistry;
- chemical heritage and the public engagement with chemistry;
- political issues in the preservation and management of scientific
heritage.
