Just thought that people might like to know that the Ontario government is
appealing the recent judge's decision that the Gallery, staff, committeess,
diretors, and everybody else who is not called Robert or Signe McMichael,
have to cease and desist and get rid of all that nast y contemporary
collection stuff that, offended the McMichael's 1920's sensitivities. This
has a lot of people breathing again, since the issue of massive
de-accesioning of the bulk of the museum's collection would have
ramifications from Revenue Canada to donors, to visitors, to the art market
in general.

Personally, I was pleasantly surprised by the appeal, since the culture
minister, Mushinski, isn't noted for her visibility or quality of decision
making, or cultural/heritage knowledge. In fact she doesn't seem to support
them much at all. One of those neo-conservative blind spots, that if you
cannot put a price on it it doesn't really exist, seems to have been
overcome, somehow. Fingers crossed that nothing goes off the rails in this
one.The McMichaels are known for their tenacious, victimized carping. The
Gallery is not out of the woods on this one yet.
