The Sutton Hoo "ship" as such was almost completely lost in burial, and
was basically identified through "shadow" soil coloration etc. in the
course of the original excavations half a century ago. Likewise the
ground conditions meant that very little other organic material
(eg. the presumed body) survived either.

However, all the spectacular "Sutton Hoo treasure" and other archaeological
finds are in the British Museum (which co-directed the original and
subsequent excavations), and have been extensively published by the
original excvation director Rupert Bruce-Mitford of the BM and others.

US-published books include:

R. Bruce-Mitford, 1974. Aspects of Anglo-Saxon Archaeology: Sutton Hoo
and other discoveries (New Yor: Harper's; 356 pages) (UK edition also
1974 by Gollancz)

The main excavation report is:

R Bruce-Mitford 1975. The Sutton Hoo Ship Burial. vol. 1 Excavations,
background, the ship, dating and inventory. vol. 2 Arms, armour and
regalia. (London: british Museum Publications).

A well-illustrated summary is:

British Museum, Dept. of British & Medieval Antiquities (several
editions, eg. 3rd ed. 1979). The Sutton Hoo Ship Burial: A Handbook
(written by Bruce-Mitford) (London: Trustees of the British Museum, 89 pages)
