Accessioning is the "formal process used to accept and record an item as
a collection object." (Marie C. Malaro, A LEGAL PRIMER ON MANAGING MUSEUM
COLLECTIONS [Wash. D.C.: Smithsonian Inst. Press, 1985, p. 53]).
 
Within this frame, acquisition means gathering objects (which will be
accessioned) through purchase, bequest, as gifts, as exchanges, or any
other way such that ensures transfer of clear title to the receiver (See
Malaro, p. 55).
 
I recommend looking closely at Malaro's book -- it will save you many
headaches and perhaps a few legal problems.
