I think the negative impact on the structure itself
was already mentioned but an email I received from
Oklahoma tonight brought this one home.

Although the power was interrupted for app. 4 hours at
her library (as compared with 4 days at her home), the
weight of the ice on the library building roof caused
a seam to split and now staff have to deal with leaks
while waiting for repairs.

In southeastern Wisconsin, the weight of this
December's snow has caused serious roof cracks at a
large supermarket (necessitating evacuation of the
store) and a suburban high school (classes cancelled
for several days this week). In neither case was the
problem worsened by power failures, just aging
structures.

Consider the effect on your roof, and make sure
there's enough money tucked away to cover repairs
since insurance policies are unlikely to cover the
damage if the situation was deliberately created.

Happy holidays and may the passing of the winter
solstice bring more sunshine to your days.
