The UK Museums Association introduced a compulsory management course and
exam in its then part-time postgraduate Museums Diploma (leading to its
Associateship) more than 30 years ago in 1964, and a substantial museum
management element was included in the ICOM Basic Syllabus for
Professional Museum Training in 1971.

Management principles, policy and operational management have been
compulsory parts of the main UK master's level museum studies
programmes since these were first launched in 1966 (Leicester) and 1967
(Manchester), as well as those in e.g. The Netherlands launched in the
early 1970s. I'm sure that at least some of the US museum studies
programmes similarly include museum management - e.g. the M.S. in Museum
Science at Texas Tech, where I've guest-lectured.

There is however a serious shortage world-wide of advanced mid-career
Museum Management courses for those with significant experience. (Our own
12 year old MA in Museum and Gallery Management expects a minimum of 5
years relevant professional experience, and the average age of our current
students on the course is mid-30s, but so far as we are aware there's
nothing comparable anywhere in Europe.)
