Mary,

In my country (Austria) a preparator (= Praeparator) works on natural
sciences material, a conservator (= Konservator) on artifacts. Both are
doing their best to keep their things in a 'state of frozen decay'.

Among other references have a look at

American Association of Museums (ed.), "Museum Positions : Duties and
Responsibilities", Museum News 57/6, 1978: 25-26.

Canadian Museums Association (ed.), A guide to museum positions. Including a
statement on the ethical behaviour of museum professionals. Ottawa, Ont. 1979.

Bates, G. W., Museums jobs from A-Z: What they are, how to prepare, and
where to find them. Fort Lauderdale, Fl. 1994.

Teather, L., Professional directions for museum work in Canada : An analysis
of museum jobs and museum studies training curricula. Canadian Museums
Association, Ottawa 1978.

Glaser, J. R. und A. A. Zenetou, Museums: A Place to Work : Planning Museum
Careers. London/New York 1996.

Best wishes,
Fritz
