$25,897 - $33,667 per annum

THIS IS A PRIVATE-FUNDED POSITION AND DOES NOT
CONFER FEDERAL COMPETITIVE STATUS.

Notice is given of a vacancy to be filled in the Information
Systems Department of the National Gallery's Treasurer's
Office.

Any applicant who wishes to be considered for this vacancy

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have at least 1 year of specialized
experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in the Federal
service.  Specialized experience is work experience in a
digital production environment producing Web pages.
Candidates must possess knowledge of HTML, including
tags for tables, frames, and other advanced features, desktop
publishing fundamentals; both IBM and Macintosh computer
systems.  Knowledge of Windows 95, WordPerfect,
QuarkXpress page layout software and Adobe Photoshop
desirable.

In addition to the OF-612 or resume, applicants should
submit the attached "Background Survey Questionnaire
79-2" (OPM Form 1386).  While candidates will not be

POSITION DESCRIPTION
PRODUCTION SPECIALIST
(INFORMATION SYSTEMS PRODUCTION SPECIALIST)
PF-1001-7

                                    Introduction
     This position is located in the Information Systems
Department of the Treasurer's Office of the National Gallery of
Art and is under the general supervision of the Collection
Systems Manager.  The incumbent is responsible for
assisting in the production of materials published on the
Gallery's World Wide Web site.

                           Major Duties
     Using Macintosh or personal computers, prepares
hypertext documents for the Gallery's Web site.
Responsible for day to day changes and maintenance of the
Web pages describing time-bound activities, including
creating and modifying the HTML pages derived from the
Gallery's monthly calendar of events, quarterly film
calendars, exhibition schedules, press releases, and other
documents as assigned by the Collection Systems Manager.
 Tracks these and other specified Web publications through
the production cycle, ensuring that texts are completed in a
timely manner.  Incumbent will use Web administration
procedures and systems developed by the Gallery to check
out/in and commit pages for publishing.  Responsible for
developing procedures and finding appropriate tools to help
track pages describing time-bound Gallery activities
advertised on the Web site.

     Works in collaboration with the content provider groups
within the Gallery to assure consistency and timeliness of
the Web site, including the editors office, education division,
exhibitions department, and press and public information
office.  Assists Collection Systems Manager in preparing
responses to external inquiries regarding the National Gallery
of Art's Web site.  As assigned by the Collection Systems
Manager, performs various editorial and word processing
tasks, including the preparation of letters requesting
permission to reproduce text and images on the Gallery Web
site.  Works with inhouse and contracting editors as needed
and enters changes in document files.

               Required Knowledge and Qualifications
     Incumbent must have working experience in a digital
production environment producing Web pages.  Must
understand HTML, including tags for tables, frames, and
other advanced features.  Incumbent must be skilled in
desktop publishing fundamentals and the use of IBM and
Macintosh computer systems.  Working knowledge of
Windows 95, WordPerfect, QuarkXpress page layout
software, and Adobe Photoshop desirable.

     The incumbent must possess excellent organizational,
verbal, and written skills and the ability to interact effectively
with a wide variety of employees.

                       Supervisory Controls
     The incumbent receives general direction and supervision
from and maintains a close working relationship with the
Collection Systems Manager.  Work is assigned and
reviewed by the Collection Systems Manager.  Incumbent
should also be able to take initiative and perform work
independently.

     Periodically the supervisor appraises the performance of
the incumbent in terms of performance elements and
standards and work plan objectives agreed upon at the
beginning of each performance period.

                            Guidelines
     The incumbent is guided by the Gallery's existing Web
publications and policies governing electronic publishing, as
well as Web publications from comparable institutions.
Local implementation guidelines are provided by the
Collection Systems Manager.  The incumbent may refer to
standard technical manuals and reference books.

                            Complexity
     The position requires versatility and flexibility in handling
varied tasks including both short and long term tasks
simultaneously. The incumbent must be capable of
organizing and setting priorities and meeting deadlines.
Effectiveness depends upon initiative, organization
and communication skills.

                         Scope and Effect
     The Gallery's Web site is vital in assisting the public in
understanding, informing and enjoying the collections and is
important in how the National Gallery is perceived by the
public.

                         Personal Contacts
     Contacts are with all members of the Web site
development team, including the Web Master and Art
Director, as well as with staff from various departments of the
Gallery.  Outside contacts are with contract writers and
editors.

                        Purpose of Contacts
     To facilitate the production of Web publications at the
Gallery.

                         Physical Demands
     The work is primarily sedentary.  From time to time, the
work requires walking, standing, bending, and carrying
books, papers, files, and items of a comparable size and
bulk.

                         Work Environment
     The work is performed in an office environment.
