Kathy,
I don't know much about the various options here but....this institutions' museum was completed in 1986. All of the windows in the galleries (a large bank of windows in the main stairwell and clerestory windows) are dual pane, low-e glass that is coated with a 3M, "Scotchtint"
(clear #SHZCLL) ultra-violet filter. This stuff is stated to block 98% of ultra-violet light and, as of '92 when levels were last accurately measured (!), this filtration worked well (we have since added coated polyester "drapes" for increased filtration and lighting control). This
filter is applied to the inside of the windows, can be washed with "anything from ammonia to vinegar", is shatter resistant and is transparent. According to the supplier, this material can be expected to lose 1/4 of 1% efficiency per year after 12 years. I am also told that it can
be pealed off so that new coating can be applied. Apparently 3M's new material (RE50 NAL) uses nickel content for increased heat and glare protection.
