This type of mentality (attempting to remove all traces of the Confederacy)
is a dangerous trend in the museum field. A similar thing occurred in
Georgia, when the Confederate Naval Museum was forced to change its name,
omitting the "C" word. The museum where I work deals with the 400+ year
history of the North Carolina Outer Banks. I can only assume that at some
point someone will be offended by the Confederate flag in our Civil War
exhibit. Likewise, someone will be equally offended by the references we
have regarding Nazi u-boats or Indian uprisings. As history professionals,
the best we can do in this climate of political correctness gone haywire, is
to present as MUCH history, as ACCURATELY as possible. Someone is always
going to be offended, that much I have learned, and we have to just do the
best we can.
