South Carolina.

2005 Wood Family Internship Program at Drayton Hall

Drayton Hall is pleased to announce the creation of the Wood Family
Internship Program. This internship program will offer graduate-level
internships at Drayton Hall‹-a National Historic Landmark and a historic
site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation‹-to focus on art and
architectural history, architectural and collections conservation,
collection management, historic preservation, and decorative arts.

The program was established in 2004 by Anthony C. Wood in memory of his
brother and parents, who were active in historic preservation. The Wood
Family internships will provide 8-week summer training opportunities to
serious graduate students and, in turn, benefit Drayton Hall and the fields
of historic preservation and museum studies in general.

Drayton Hall is well positioned to provide graduate students an exceptional
internship experience. Drayton Hall is a world-class site and a significant
touchstone in American architectural and cultural history. Completed in
1742, Drayton Hall is the oldest preserved plantation house in America that
is open to the public and is one of a handful of pre-Revolutionary American
houses in nearly original condition. A landmark in American colonial
architecture, it was the first building of its kind in the nation. Our
staff, the expert consultants who regularly work on-site, and the staff of
the National Trust create a ³faculty² capable of teaching and nurturing
emerging professionals in the field, and the internship experience we are
committed to providing will profoundly affect the careers of the graduate
students who come to Drayton Hall.

Each year, applications will be solicited for specific projects or project
areas, to be rotated among the internship program¹s areas of interest. The
program¹s first year will concentrate on Drayton Hall¹s furniture
collection, and the second year will give interns the opportunity to work
alongside recognized experts in architectural history as they investigate
the construction history and significance of Drayton Hall. Topics for
subsequent years will be announced at a later time.

For this first year of the program, Drayton Hall invites applications from
qualified graduate students with in interest in collections management,
research, and conservation, specifically focusing on Drayton Hall¹s
heretofore unresearched 18th- and 19th-century large object and furniture
collections. One of the most significant objects in these small collections
is a magnificent mahogany desk-and-bookcase (English, c. 1740) that features
lavish rococo carving and extensive inlay and marquetry. It is related to
other Drayton furniture items in the Drayton Hall collections and other
collections, as well as architectural details in Drayton Hall itself.
Internship work will include the following, concentrating on the furniture
and large object collections: review and update the current collections
management database; complete a collections survey; conduct research on
construction, origin, provenance, and significance (selected objects);
synthesize the research; and make preliminary recommendations for future
conservation. At the conclusion of the 8-week internship, the intern will
make a formal oral presentation on his/her research for staff and Friends of
Drayton Hall.

In order to increase diversity and multiculturalism in the fields of museum
studies and historic preservation, we encourage students from diverse
racial, ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds to apply.
