Unlisted and all,

If there had been a little more drama beforehand, perhaps it would have
turned out better.

They have known for a long, long time this was coming. Much has been done
to try and prevent the almost inevitable disaster, but much has also been
done to undermine those efforts. Much of it recently under the watchful eye
of our current tax cut-obssessed, millionaire president. Wetlands and
islands that would have helped slow the surges were destroyed or developed.
This last year was the first in decades that the Corps of Engineers did not
work to improve and maintain the levees. Why, you ask would they do such an
incredibly self-destructive thing? Budget cuts designed to make room for
more tax breaks for the rich, and an apparent complete lack of concern for
the local environment.

I for one love New Orleans, its history, and its culture. I even have a
fondness for some of its inhabitants. I would hate to see any of it cease
to exist. I am however at a loss to see how I can have any effect on
decades of greed, waste, and inadequate geographic surveying, especially
when my own government undermines anything we do at every turn.

I apologize for the less that cheery thought, but we should all keep in
mind that hurricane season is not over yet, and even if they manage to
clean up the city, it could happen again. This was not even the "worst case
scenario".
