ARCHEOLOGIST ASSISTANT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The work involves assisting in archeological and historical research under the
supervision of the Director of Cultural Resources, Environmental Resources
Management Branch, Facilities and Engineering Directorate of the Texas Army
National Guard.  The employee will assist the Staff Archeologist in survey,
testing, and laboratory analysis.  The employee will also assist the Staff
Historian in archival research, photography, oral history interviews, and
preparation of reports and National Register documentation for historic
structures.   Travel may be required 25% to 75% of the time.  Employment is
for a six-month period, renewable.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
* Assists in archeological surveys and test excavations
* Assists in preparing research reports, scopes of work, and data recovery
 plans
* Assists in mapping archeological sites
* Conducts small-scale surveys for specific construction projects and
 training exercises
* Monitors trenching, scraping, and other construction activities for
 archeological remains
* Analyzes artifacts, soil samples, and flotation samples in the lab
* Assists in preparing illustrations, photographs, and maps for reports
 and publications
* Assists in archival searches and oral history interviews
* Assists in preparing reports and National Register documentation for
 historic structures
* Performs other duties as needed to comply with State and Federal regulations
* Other duties as assigned
 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Experience and Training
*  At least two years of experience with archeology and/or historic
  preservation.
*  Must have excellent writing and communication skills
*  Ability to complete assigned work on time
 
Education
*  Undergraduate degree from an accredited university.  Four years of
  experience in archeology will be considered in place of an undergraduate
  degree.
*  Preference given for those with degrees in Anthropology, History,
  Geography, Classics, or a related Environmental Science.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
*  Map reading skills required
*  Good communication and writing ability
*  Preference will be given to individuals with special skills including
  historic or archival research, soils and geomorphology, use of surveying
  instruments and cartography, illustrating or drafting skills, photography,
  statistical skills, osteology, or lithic analysis.
